Cagli: Church of St. Bartholomew - High Altar

Also raised by the carver Benedetto Ginestra of Fossombrone in 1632, and later gilded by master Pierleone Feltrini of Acqualagna, the high altar becomes a kind of chancel of the new church and is skillfully connected to the old ceiling where the bright green within the tiles serves to accentuate the perspective effect.
The altar rests on a plastered masonry base that forms an indentation with a trapezoidal base housing the mensa, in which the body of St. Valerius Martyr is placed within a wooden urn.
The two shell-shaped side niches with cornices decorated with foliage are bordered by six fluted Corinthian order columns, four of which are coupled in the inner corner.
The entablature has acorns and spindles and the frieze decorated with golden florals on a blue background.
The final part of the high altar consists of three free-standing folders, of which the two side ones have straight frames and a carved coat of arms in the center; the central one, with a curved tympanum, bears a cherub and festoons.
In the two shell niches were placed the two wooden statues depicting St. John the Evangelist (arrived from Rome in 1638) and St. Bartholomew the Apostle.
In 1777 the Capicci - Grassi family donated to the church the image of Our Lady of Good Counsel, which features an elaborate frame made by Marco Batazzi of Gubbio, then placed in the center of the altar.
