Fano: Giardinetto Leopardi
The Piazzale Leopardi Garden is located at the intersection of Via Nolfi and Via Montevecchio in Fano.
It originated when the former waxworks building that occupied a large part of it was demolished in 1898 (1).
News of its arrangement can be read in the 'Piccolo Corriere,' No. 27 of 9-7-1898:
'On 29 corr. the indicative plaque was walled in Leopardi Square and now work is being done on planting trees and flowers in the small garden (...)'
The gate that bordered the garden was removed in 1936 during the Ethiopian War. The puteal placed in the center of the garden was also removed to return it to the cloister of the Convent of St. Paternian, where it was originally. In its place (2009) was placed the puteal that was originally in the cloister of St. Maria Nuova.
In the garden is the broken trunk of an old Yew Tree(Taxus baccata), ruined around 1990 by a storm.
