Gaetano Lapis: Glory of St. Clare

Gaetano Lapis: Glory of St. Clare (1721-1724)

The fresco of St. Clare, which Gaetano Lapis painted in his youth (1721 1724), clearly follows the teachings of master Sebastiano Conca that were initially proposed in the 'Glory of St. Cecilia' for the vault of the anonymous church in Rome (1725).

In the painting Lapis extensively uses the taste and appearances of the 18th century while deriving them from what he learned from the masters of the previous century.

Indeed, the modification of the more heavily Baroque forms with less forced features is clear.

In the painting the Saint is presented in glory by St. Francis in a scene thick with characters.

The fresco was restored in 1991, although the fracture line marking the faces of the two saints is still clearly visible.
